This morning in New York negotiations resumed on the Convention on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. The draft is a good basis for discussion, and includes strong language including on the prohibition of assisting with any making, having or using of nuclear weapons. Briefing paper: Banning investment – An explicit prohibition on the financing of nuclear weapons producers

On March 27, negotiations started in the United Nations in New York on a new legally binding instrument banning nuclear weapons. PAX submitted a working paper to the conference on the issue of an explicit prohibition on financing in the new treaty.

Banking on a ban: nuclear ban negotiations side event

On the opening day of the UN negotiations for a new legal instrument banning nuclear weapons, PAX and the Future of Life Institute hosted a side event on the impact a treaty banning nuclear weapons would have on nuclear-armed states. Speakers included Fabian Hamilton, Member of the UK Parliament; John Tierney (Council for a Livable World); Max Tegmark (Future of Life Institute & MIT); and Ray Acheson (Reaching Critical Will of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom). KBC, a Belgian financial institution, responded to the 2016 update of Don’t Bank on the Bomb. The response reflects on KBC’s recently updated policy around weapons- including nuclear weapons. Textron to end the production of cluster munitions

Great news! American company Textron has announced it will end its involvement with cluster munitions. This is wonderful news and truly a victory for the global campaign against cluster munitions showcasing the valuable contribution divestment makes to disarmament.
