Nuclear weapons

Babcock sustains the entirety of the UK’s submarine fleet, including by delivering through-life support and life extension of the nuclear armed Vanguard class submarine.[i] In 2021, Babcock received a £3.5 billion, five-year contract with the UK Ministry of Defence for naval base operations, including at the HMNB Clyde, where UK nuclear armed submarines are stationed.[ii]

In 2023, Babcock completed the maintenance and life-extension programme for the HMS Vanguard and returned it to the Royal Navy.[iii] The UK government also awarded two further contracts for work on the nuclear armed Dreadnought class submarines, with a combined value of £120 million.[iv] Furthermore, under a £560 million contract, awarded in March 2024, Babcock will modernize the second of the Vanguard class, the HMS Victorious, to enable it to continue operational patrols “well into the 2030s”.[v]

In June 2020, Babcock was also subcontracted by General Dynamics to provide an additional 18 tactical Missile Tube Assemblies for both the UK Dreadnought and the U.S. Colombia-class submarines, designed to be armed with Trident nuclear weapons.[vi]
